If you are looking for a tropical island escape this winter, look no further than Grand Bahama Island! Located off the coast of Florida, Grand Bahama is an easily accessible vacation destination, especially if you are on the east coast!
How To Get There
If you are looking to visit to Grand Bahama there are two main travel options: by air or by sea. While flying may be a bit quicker, the Balearia Ferry is a great option for those who are hesitant to fly.
Tips for first timers:
- Just like flying, arrive at the terminal at least 1 hour before boarding. Doors will close and this gives you time to go through customs and check in since you are traveling internationally.
- Choose a seat near the exit. Depending on how many people are on board the lines to exit can get long. Ask the onboard staff where the exit is and sit as close as you can.
- The ferry only runs on Tuesdays and Fridays so plan accordingly.
Where to Stay
If you are looking for a beautiful place to disconnect and truly relax I highly recommend a stay at the Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach. When I say this is an all-inclusive resort I mean it! Located right on the beach, the Viva Wyndham offers its guests the opportunity to get out on the ocean with a section of water activities. In addition, the resort offers a selection of on-site activities such as beachside yoga and water aerobics lead by trained activity directors.
For those traveling with young children, you can relax knowing that it is a property located in a safe area. So take advantage of the on-site kids club and head to the beach to relax.
Lastly, I want to make a note about the food on property. I know food can be hit or miss with all-inclusive but I am happy to report that the food at Viva Wyndham is really good! What I loved is that they have a variety of food options available, particularly vegetarian options, to satisfy picky eaters like me.
Where to Eat
Stone Crab Restaurant
If you are looking for a delicious meal with a view look no further than the Stone Crab Restaurant! This beachside restaurant has a fun vibe and a great menu. Highly recommend making your dinner reservation early so you can catch sunset on the swings.
Fish Fry
On Wednesday nights head over to the Fish Fry! It is a great local spot set outdoors with great food, live music and dancing.
Dive-in Marina Bar and Restaurant
Delicious brunch spot with a view. Highly recommend the French toast!
Green Gamut
Great spot for vegan food on the island.
What to Do
Explore the Island by Boat
When on Grand Bahama Island, I highly recommend chartering a boat and getting out on the water! Make the most of the stunning blue waters and take the opportunity to swim with the local marine life, including stingrays and sharks.
ATV Tour
One of my favorite experiences on the island was the ATV tour with Grand Bahama Nature Tours. GB Nature Tours takes you all around the island- through private off-roading trails to the beach and more. A great way to explore the island.
Explore the Caves and National Parks
Grand Bahama Island is known for their natural beauty. During your trip I highly recommend taking the time to explore some of the national parks.
