Have you ever stumbled across a well done travel blog and dreamed of starting one yourself? You see these successful bloggers and influencers getting paid to cross destinations off of their bucket list and live these adventurous lives. The truth is that is easier than you might think to start a travel blog! Many of these highly successful travel bloggers were once in your shoes, dreaming of traveling the world from the comfort of their home. The only difference between them and you is that they took the first step and created a website.
If you are looking for tips on how to start a blog, check out this post where I walk you through the steps on how to start a blog on WordPress and set it up for success.
If you are looking to learn how travel bloggers make money, I recommend checking out this post where I go over the different possible revenue streams for bloggers.
However, if you are looking for ideas on how to start writing travel content from the comfort of your home, you have come to the right place! Below I am sharing ideas of content you can write without getting on a plane.
Why Start a Travel Blog
There are many reasons to start a travel blog. You can start a travel blog to help people planning trips to destinations you have been. As a hobby to remember placed you loved. But my favorite reason to start a travel blog, or any kind of blog, is to connect with like minded people and form a community.
Write a Travel Guide from Your Hometown
Believe it or not, you do not have to travel to these fancy bucket-list destinations in order to start a blog. Someone’s dream destination could be right in your back yard. Have you ever dreamed about traveling to the beaches of California or exploring the city of New York? Well somebody has to live there! Start by writing a travel guide for your hometown or a town nearby.
Topic Ideas
” A Local’s Guide to ____”
“10 Best Restaurants in ____” or even more specific like “10 Best Vegetarian Restaurants in ____” or “10 Best Food Trucks in ____”
“5 Can’t Miss Places in ____”
“7 Free Things to Do in ____”
Take Weekend Trips
Once you have written a travel guide about your hometown, start taking weekend trips. These can be places that are within driving distance or easy to fly to. Treat each trip as a business trip, take pictures and make notes of all the places you would recommend (or not recommend) to others.
Write Travel Tips
Everyone loves reading tips on how to travel! There is a huge audience for articles on how to save money booking flights, secrets to free upgrades on planes, or even how to pack everything into a carry-on suitcase. What might be second nature to you could be new information to someone else. Write about your own travel hacks and create guides to help others.
Topic Ideas
“How To Survive a Long Road Trip”
“How To Survive a Red Eye Flight in Coach“
“3 Ways to Book Cheap Flights”
“The Complete Guide on How To Book a Trip on Credit Card Points”
Write Packing Guides for a Destination
Packing guides are also extremely popular posts. And the best part is that you can link most of these products with an affiliate code! That means that if someone purchases a product that you recommend, you will earn a commission. You literally make money talking about your favorite products!
However, I caution you to not be too salesy and instead focus on helping your audience. For tips on how to write a successful post that converts, check out this post.
Talk About Past Trips
Is there a place that you have traveled to that you can talk about in detail? Blog about it! You don’t have to limit your blog posts to current or future trips. You can write about places that you have visited in the past as well.
Interview Your Friends
Get your friends involved by asking them if you can interview them on past places they have visited. This is a great way to get more content- and more views! Most likely they will share your post with their friends and family which will help you to build your audience.
If you are looking for ideas on how to do this, my friend Kelsey from Tiny Traveler Blog wrote this post interviewing a few bloggers about their favorite New England road trips.
Write a Travel Story
In addition to just writing travel guides, make it more personal by blogging about some of your top travel stories. These could be things that have gone wrong (like losing your passport or having your train stolen in Prague) or some of the best moments of your life (waking up to watch the sunrise in a beautiful destination). These posts will help your readers get to know you and your personality.
